Brits love food so much that one in three people (33%) will decide their next destination based on local specialties, according to a new report.
Instead of venturing overseas, Brits are looking closer to home for their holidays this year, with two-thirds of Brits (66%) planning to enjoy a staycation, but it turns out food is a real clincher when it comes to where.
Over half of Brits (58%) admit that one of the main appeals of staying in the country is exploring British food. They’ll even spend up to three hours researching the area for food recommendations before reaching their destination, with 68% of Brits keen to get stuck into local dishes when they get there.
Good food plays a huge role in enjoying a holiday, with 69% of Brits stating that decent grub is one of their main highlights. It’s not just eating out either, as we’re also partial to self-catering, with over half of Brits (53%) organising a food shop for their stay. Meanwhile, 40% claim that cooking facilities such as a well-equipped kitchen, barbecue area, and even pizza ovens are the deciding factor when booking accommodation.
The new study by online supermarket Ocado and cottages.com, which spoke to 2000 adults, found that Great British flavours have a stronghold on the population, who are keen to sample local delights, such as fish and chips, fresh seafood, scones, ice cream, and locally brewed beer.
But it doesn’t stop there. Half of holidaymakers (49%) will also take a little home with them to extend the taste of their trips to keep the holiday spirit going.
To celebrate tasty British grub, Ocado has created regional tasting aisles inspired by the most-searched areas on Cottages.com, which include Yorkshire, the Lake District, the West Country, and East Anglia. These online aisles showcase local small producers, regional specialties, and classic dishes.
