About Breathe Battery Technologies

Breathe Battery Technologies is a pioneering company in the field of battery system performance enhancement through software. Founded in 2019 as a spin-out from Imperial College London, Breathe was established by Dr Ian Campbell, Dr Yan Zhao, and Professor Greg Offer. Their inception was driven by a shared frustration over the lack of focus on battery system performance in the industry.

The company’s mission is straightforward yet ambitious: to make batteries better. Breathe tackles complex problems in battery technology, approaching them comprehensively from concept to implementation. Their goal is to contribute to a faster, better, and more sustainable electrification of the world.

Since its start, Breathe has overcome significant challenges in the battery technology sector. One major hurdle was addressing the underperformance of batteries due to outdated control systems. The company developed innovative solutions like Breathe Charge and Breathe Life, which replace traditional charging strategies with adaptive solutions. These products dynamically adjust to each battery’s unique needs, ensuring longevity and optimal performance.

Breathe’s impact on the SaaS industry, particularly in the battery technology sector, has been substantial. They’ve introduced a paradigm shift in how companies approach battery management and charging. By providing sophisticated software solutions that can be implemented without hardware changes, Breathe has enabled both automotive and consumer electronics brands to significantly enhance their products’ performance and sustainability.

Breathe’s software is now present in millions of smartphones, demonstrating its scalability and real-world impact. For instance, as the software behind OPPO’s Battery Health Engine, Breathe enables smartphones to retain 90% capacity after two years and 80% capacity after four years of usage – effectively doubling the typical smartphone battery lifetime.

In the automotive sector, Breathe has made significant strides. Their partnership with Volvo Cars in March 2024 marked a milestone, making Volvo the first car company to implement Breathe’s latest adaptive charging software in their new generation of fully electric vehicles. This implementation is expected to reduce charging times from 10% to 80% state of charge by up to 30%, while maintaining energy density and range. Breathe also received investment from the Volvo Cars Tech Fund, Volvo’s corporate venture capital arm as part of that partnership.

Prior to this, in 2021, Breathe secured a £1.5 million seed round led by Speedinvest, Europe’s largest seed stage investor by dollars of assets under management. They also subsequently raised a $10 million Series A with Lowercarbon Capital, one of the world’s largest climate tech investors by assets under management.

The company’s rapid growth is evident in its recent expansion. Breathe has doubled its workforce from 30 to 60 employees in the past year, reflecting the increasing demand for its innovative solutions. Additionally, the company has expanded into new offices in Oval and doubled its laboratory capacity, reinforcing its status as the largest battery lab in London. This expansion not only demonstrates Breathe’s success but also strengthens its capability to develop and test cutting-edge battery technologies.
