The 00s gave us some real gems – the rise of pop punk, Desperate Housewives and some of Destiny’s Child’s greatest hits. But when it comes to fashion, this decade was most definitely a mixed bag.
Once upon a time the 00s – the era of butterfly clips, low-rise jeans and (whisper it quietly) wedges – was thought of as the era fashion forgot.
But trends have a way of coming back around and we’ve seen a resurgence of those very looks we thought belonged to the history books on A-listers and fashionistas alike.
After all, our 00s fashion muses Paris Hilton, Kate Moss and Britney Spears couldn’t have all been wrong, right?
For those of us who were born in the 90s and still clearly remember these fashion moments the first time around, the fact that youngsters are calling it ‘vintage’ is a tad alarming. But here we are.
These are the big 00s fashion trends that have well and truly made a comeback.
Cargo Pants
Cargo pants have been a Gen Z favourite for quite some time, with the low-rise practical trousers, often adorned with oversized pockets, commonly seen worn with crop tops or cute knits.
Rooted in utilitarianism there’s something fashion-forward about this look, particularly when paired with heels, if you dare.
Bucket Hats
The humble bucket hat; functional and now back in vogue. Christina Aguilera, Brad Pitt and Britney were early pioneers of the trend, wearing colourful bucket hats on dressed-down days.
Nowadays it’s more about neutral tones and different textures to bring the look up to date.
Butterfly Hair Clips
Remember the era of the butterfly clip? Well, it’s back in a big way, and Taylor’s Swift Eras tour played a big part in this, with Swifties donning retro hair clips along with cowboy boots and sequin dresses.
Strappy Sandals
Flimsy strappy sandals that resemble flip-flops with heels, often with a kitten heel and bow details were all the rage in the ’00s.
These minimal heels have made a big comeback and the beauty of this style is that it can be dressed up or down. Wear with a dress for a ’00s-inspired evening look or with jeans and a t-shirt for effortless daytime glamour.
Tube Tops
Tube tops, also known as bandeau tops, were a big part of ’00s fashion, with strapless reigning supreme not just as tops, but also dresses. Nowadays, the tube top is worn in a more relaxed style, often with an oversized shirt and jeans or loose fitting trousers for a more casual ensemble.
Capri Pants
Capri pants, or pedal pushes as we affectionately remember them, were a big part of ’00s wardrobes and this cut-off style has seen a resurgence in popularity with cut-off leggings and cycling shorts recent iterations of the trend.
While we’re not all perhaps inclined to wear the look with heels in true ’00s style, these skintight trousers aren’t too difficult to wear if teamed with a baggy jumper and trainers. Or something dressier if you want to embrace ’00s glam in all its glory.
We can practically smell the Charlie Red, and still find glitter in crevices from all those years ago…
