Ryanair urges passengers to pack one hand luggage item ‘first’

Must read

Ryanair is known for its cheap flights, with seats sometimes on sale for less than £20 one-way, however, this price can soon add up if you want any additional extras. And that includes luggage. Passengers flying on a standard Ryanair ticket only get one small hand bag, and even if you decide to pay for Priority, you must follow strict luggage size rules. Overpacking could see you slapped with a fee at the airport.

In a bid to help passengers make the most of their luggage allowance, Ryanair shared some handy packing tips. According to the Irish carrier, there is one item you should pack in your bag before anything else and it can even save space.

Ryanair said: “Pack your shoes first, lining the sides of your case.” Lining your case with your shoes will leave the rest of the bag free to roll or fold your clothes and pack any other essentials.

However, your shoes could also help save space by acting as a vessel for smaller items. Ryanair explained: “Stuff your shoes with socks and smaller items of clothing, gadgets or jewellery. This will also prevent your shoes from losing their shape.”

Whether you roll or fold your clothes when packing is largely a personal preference. While a study from Which? concluded that folding is better than rolling in many cases, Ryanair still advises rolling your clothes.

They describe this as “the golden rule“. The airline said: “Follow the golden rule of rolling your clothes rather than folding.

“Not only will this give you more room, but you’ll also find that your clothes are less creased. “

What is Ryanair’s luggage allowance?

All Ryanair fares include one small personal bag which can be brought on board, such as a handbag or laptop bag, but this can only measure up to 40 x 20 x 25cm and must fit under the seat in front of you. Anything more than that and you’ll have to pay extra.

Passengers can pay for Priority which entitles them to board via the Priority boarding queue at the gate, plus take one small personal bag measuring 40 x 20 x 25cm and a 10kg bag measuring 55 x 40 x 20cm.

If you wish to check in a bag, you can add a 10kg or 20kg check-in bag to your booking which must be dropped off at the check-in desk before security. Both come at an additional cost.
