The University of Liverpool has risen 11 places in the QS World University Rankings 2025 to 165th. The rankings include 1,000 of the world’s leading universities.

The QS World University Rankings is an annual league table based on four key pillars: research, teaching, employability and internationalisation. In the latest ranking, the University has seen particular improvements in the ‘Academic Reputation’ and ‘Employer Reputation’ indicators as well as ‘Sustainability’. The University rose 15 places to 176th place for academic reputation, Liverpool’s employer reputation rose 38 to 239th place and sustainability rose 143 places to 50th out of 1000 global institutions.

The results draw on the analysis of expert opinions of more than 240,000 academic faculty and employers. The Academic Reputation metric evaluates the perceptions of global academics on which institutions are demonstrating academic excellence. While Employer Reputation evaluates the perceptions of global employers on which institutions are providing the most job-ready graduates.

Significantly the QS World University Rankings evaluate the social and environmental impact of universities and provides students and prospective students with an insight into how institutions are demonstrating a commitment to more sustainable practices.

University of Liverpool Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Jones said: “This significant advance in our global ranking position is fantastic news. In September last year, we launched our new strategic vision, Liverpool 2031, which set out our ambitions to becoming a global top 100 university. Today’s news shows we are another step closer to realising this goal.

“Significantly we have seen great improvement in academic reputation and employer reputation indicators. As a research-intensive university, it is important that our work is recognised by our academic peers and that industry professionals value our crucial contribution in shaping the future workforce. We are also delighted to see our major rise in sustainability rankings as we continue to actively work towards our long-term goal of driving forward environmental and social equity through our education, research and operations.”
