Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen is out to win double European gold at a third successive European Athletics Championships following his 5,000m title defence on Saturday evening.

The 23-year-old, the reigning Olympic 1500m champion, also achieved that feat by winning 1500m and 5,000m gold in Berlin in 2018 and Munich two years ago.

Including indoor and cross country titles, he is now a 12-time European champion – and he will hope to make that a lucky 13 tonight as he prepares for an expected gold-medal showdown with Britain’s world 1500m champion Josh Kerr in Paris in eight weeks’ time.

Also in the men’s 1500m final are Britons Neil Gourley and and Adam Fogg.

Scot Gourley, 29, won his first major international medal at last year’s European indoor championships, while Fogg was added to the final start list after being impeded by a fall in his heat.

The only other athlete in this final to join Ingebrigtsen in having run sub-3:30 is Frenchman Azeddine Habz, so expect to see the Norwegian up at the front dictating the race as he often prefers.
