Hidden gem island with secluded beaches is ‘overshadowed’ by famous neighbour

Must read

A hidden island gem off the coast of Italy is rapidly climbing the ranks on British holidaymakers’ bucket wish lists thanks to its secluded beaches and stunning vistas.

More than 70 million visitors grace the nation each year, and it’s hardly a surprise given its famed cuisine, rich history and its many tempting cities – not to mention the sunny weather.

The canals of Venice and the streets of Naples and Rome are often teeming with holiday-makers, but for those looking to take the path less travelled, islands such as Capri, Sicily, and Sardinia are becoming go-to destinations.

But Capri has a lesser-known neigbour with jaw-dropping cliffs, hidden coves, quaint pastel-coloured homes, and even the odd celebrity connection.

Travel influencer Izzy Deering said of the stunning island: “Welcome to Procida: the island in Italy often overshadowed by Capri and Ishcia.

“[It’s] just as beautiful but with no crowds.”

Izzy showed off Procida’s vibrant marina, secluded shorelines, vibrant sunsets, and aquamarine waters. She recommended a stay of three or four nights, recommending several eateries where sumptuous mains are served at wallet-friendly prices starting from €12 (£10).

Cinephiles might well recognise the charming pastel-coloured houses and quaint alleyways of Procida, as it served as a backdrop for the cinematic adaptation of “The Talented Mr Ripley.”

The film, which has recently been reimagined in a TV mini-series featuring Andrew Scott named ‘Ripley’, originally starred big names like Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Cate Blanchett.

Scores of viewers were quick to express their desire to visit, flooding the comments section. “Hopping on a flight right now,” one social media user said.

Another chimed in: “This is next on my bucket list!” while third exclaimed: “Wow looks amazing!”. Meanwhile a fourth enthused: “Stop, this is too beautiful.”

Those who had already experienced the allure of the island were eager to endorse it, with one commenter recalling: “Such a beautiful island, I stayed there for a week and it was amazing!”

If you want to go to Procida, it’s best to go to Naples first. Many UK airports offer direct flights to Naples International including Edinburgh, Manchester, Stansted and Luton.

If you’re not bound by specific travel dates, you could snag return flights for as little as £40.

From there, a ferry ride from Naples will whisk you to the island in about 45 minutes. Ferry tickets are quite affordable, starting at just €9 (£7.60), and can be booked in advance online.

Ferries also depart from other locations such as Sorrento, Salerno, Amalfi, Positano, Pozzuoli, and Baiae.

Depending on your preferences, accommodation on Procida can vary in price. For instance, a four-star hotel just 250 yards from the beach would cost you £423.

This is based on two adults and one child staying for three nights (Sep 2-5). However, a simpler room 0.6 miles from the centre, including breakfast, would only set you back £203 for the same dates.
