Foreign Office updates Greece Brits travel warning over ‘heightened security’

Tourists currently enjoying their holidays in Greece have been cautioned to ‘stay aware of your surroundings’ and ‘follow the advice of local authorities’. This comes in the wake of an escalation in security measures at key tourist sites.

The Foreign Office has issued an update to its travel guidance for tourists visiting Greece. This included warning over crime, adherence to local laws, and potential protests.

Greek officials have decided to increase their security presence around popular venues following incidents occurring in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

There have been demonstrations recently with more expected to go ahead, particularly in the capital city of Athens. Holidaymakers have been urged to remain vigilant and to steer clear of protest areas.

In case of a sudden demonstration occurrence, visitors are being advised to leave the vicinity immediately, reports Birmingham Live.

The advice given by the Foreign Office states, “Greek authorities have increased security at some prominent locations, including tourist sites, due to events in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.”

It also mentions, “There is currently a heightened risk of such protests, particularly in central Athens. Stay aware of your surroundings, stay away from protests and follow the advice of local authorities.”

The government has warned that strikes can come about with little to no notice and could subsequently impact the bus, train, ferry, and air travel services. Furthermore, road networks and border access could be disrupted.

Previous demonstrations have seen activity predominantly around main squares in central Athens, notably Syntagma Square.

The Foreign Office warned: “Some demonstrations in the past have turned violent. Avoid demonstrations wherever possible and move away to the last known safe place. Security forces often use tear gas to break up demonstrations, which can harm your breathing and vision.”

Furthermore, holidaymakers are urged to keep secure a copy of the photograph page of their passport, due to frequent thefts of wallets, handbags and passports in crowded tourist spots. Greek laws require tourists to always carry their passport for identification checks by police, and it’s vital to remember that photocopied versions may not be accepted.

In order to ensure safety, the UK Government advises that valuables be distributed amongst several pockets or bags, while on the road, valuables must remain hidden with the vehicle always locked. When parking, opt for a well-lit area or a secure car park whenever feasible.
