Jet2 issues Greece travel warning as wildfires tear through island

Must read

Jet2 has issued an important alert to holidaymakers in certain Greece regions as wildfires tear through an island very popular with UK tourists.

The area of Kardamena on the Greek island of Kos is currently under alert for severe wildfires, with people being evacuated from the dangerous zones by the local authorities.

It comes after a prolonged spell of very hot and dry weather in Greece, combined with strong winds which can make the wildfires spread even further.

Greece is known for its severe weather during the warmer months, so in order to stay safe, it’s important to follow the guidance carefully.

In a new statement posted online, Jet2 urged anybody in the affected region to follow the advice of local authorities in order to stay safe.

They said: “We are aware of the ongoing situation regarding wildfires in the Kardamena area of Kos. The safety and well-being of our customers and colleagues is always our first priority and we would like to advise our customers on the island to follow the guidance of the local authorities.”

The budget airline also confirmed all of its flights were scheduled to operate today (June 2) with the airport remaining operational. However, due to the unpredictable nature of the situation, the airport might be busier than normal and you could experience longer wait times.

Jet2 continued: “Our Friendly Red Team are on hand to assist you and we will issue updates to our customers via SMS and email, should the situation change.”

It comes a year after a series of wildfires spread through Rhodes in Greece, forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes and hotels. The current situation has been described as ‘apocalyptic’ by witnesses, with the sky covered in thick smoke.
