UK General elections 2024: How UK voted- Key constituency-wise winners and losers

Must read

UK General Election 2024: The 2024 general elections in the UK were held on July 4, when the world saw groundbreaking changes and outcomes across 650 constituencies. The Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, made significant gains, advertently winning seats in South England, which were previously considered conservative strongholds.

This is a major shift in the UK’s politics, especially when comparing it to the 2019 election results, where the Labour Party’s effort ran futile.

The Conservative Party though retains several key constituencies, but faced notable losses, particularly in urban areas and parts of Scotland. On the contrary, the Scottish National Party (SNP) maintained a strong presence in Scotland, even after losing a few seats to Labour and the Conservatives.

One thing that played a pivotal role in the 2024 elections was the boundary changes of 2023, which affected the distribution of seats. The changes favoured the Conservative Party in rural areas of England but fell short of prominence in urban regions.

UK General Election 2024: Winners and losers on key constituency seats

As of 0600 GMT, the Labour Party beats the exit poll prediction by winning a whopping 410 seats out of a total of 650 seats in parliament. This is a remarkable reversal of fates from five years ago when it suffered its worst-ever performance since 1935. On the other side, Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party could only fetch 119 seats, which is even less than the exit polls that predicted them to win at least 131 seats.

Here are some key constituencies with their winners and losers:

Basildon and Billericay– Conservative Party’s Richard Hodden manages to hold this seat by winning it by 12,905 votes.

Richmond and Northallerton– PM Rishi Sunak won his seat in Richmond and Northallerton by 23,059 votes.

Swindon South– Labour Party gains from Conservatives from this seat. Heidi Alexander won the seat by 21, 676 votes.

Broxbourne– Conservative Party’s Lewis Cocking won the seat with 15,810 votes.

Holborn and St Pancras– Labour Party manages to hold this seat by winning 18,884 votes. Keir Starmer, the potential new PM of Britain won from this seat.

Cramlington and Killingworth– Labour Party’s Emma Foody manages to hold this seat by garnering 22,274 votes.

Hamilton and Clyde Valley– Labour Party gains from Scottish National Party on this seat. Imogen Walker won by 21,020 votes.

Cannock Chase– Labour took this Tory seat back for the first time since 2010. Josh Newbury won by 15,671 votes.

Castle Point– Conservative Party’s Rebecca Harris manages to hold this set by winning it by 15,485 votes.

Clacton– Reform UK gains from Conservative Party from this seat. Nigel Farage won by 21,225 votes. He is the second Reform UK candidate to win after Lee Anderson took Ashfield earlier.

The 2024 election marked a significant reshaping of the UK’s political landscape, with Labour making impressive strides and the Conservatives facing a more challenging path ahead. The detailed and official results are expected to be declared on July 12.
