Luxuriously wild campsite in Wales has proper loos, ancient pub and bell tents

Must read

While the mere mention of soggy sleeping bags and damp tents might send shivers down the spine of many, a Welsh campsite is redefining the camping experience with a touch of luxury amidst the great outdoors.

Nestled within the grounds of a historic estate, the Hawarden Estate Farm Shop campsite beckons outdoor enthusiasts to “celebrate the great outdoors during spring, summer and early autumn”. This idyllic retreat offers an expansive 6.5 acres of stunning Welsh countryside for visitors to call their own.

The campsite boasts a limited number of 26 pitches, ensuring ample space for all who seek solace in this rural haven. Accommodation options range from self-pitched tents to elegant pre-erected bell tents, strategically placed within two wildflower meadows that afford breathtaking views of the ancient Hawarden Old Castle, a motte-and-bailey fortress dating back to the 14th century.

Perched on the cusp of Wales, the site once formed part of the grand estate belonging to William Gladstone, Britain’s four-time Prime Minister. The campsite’s online portal proudly proclaims it as “Wild, but absolutely luxurious” and boldly asserts its status as “the best in North Wales.”

A charming TikTok video has been circulated, showcasing the serene and tranquil atmosphere that awaits visitors at this unique camping destination, reports Wales Online.

Forget the hustle and bustle of crowded campsites, overpriced clubhouses and busy playgrounds. This tranquil haven offers a slower pace of life for campers without compromising on essential amenities.

The site is family-friendly and dog-friendly, limiting its capacity to just 26 pitches to preserve the natural environment.

But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s all quiet contemplation and birdsong. The site boasts an array of fantastic activities and attractions.

The heart of this rural retreat is the Hawarden Farm Shop, a combination of cafe, deli and artisan bakery. It also serves as the starting point for the Explorer Trail, an interactive adventure through fields, orchards and surrounding woodlands designed to engage younger visitors.

Eschewing traditional entertainment arcades and fast food outlets, the estate’s hub focuses on promoting fresh food and wholesome entertainment.

Weekend lake swimming sessions are available throughout July and August, and there are numerous delightful walks through private Estate parkland, ancient forests and into the wilds of North Wales.

Adding a touch of luxury to the camping experience, the site features ‘proper loos’ and showers. Because while it’s great to connect with nature, it’s even better to do so in comfort.

After spending an afternoon in the countryside, a refreshing pint and a scrumptious meal awaits at The Glynne Arms. Situated in the heart of Hawarden village, this award-winning establishment boasts a picturesque courtyard that’s simply sublime for summer days, alongside seasonally shifting menus.

Proud recipient of The AA Welsh Pub of the Year (2020), The Glynne Arms offers diners a menu meticulously composed by chef Adam Williams, who fervently supports locally sourced produce. Patrons can indulge in delicious bar snacks, a sumptuous main menu, and a Sunday lunch that garners envious glances – reservations come highly recommended if camping visitors wish to partake in these edible delights.

This venerable tavern, standing for over two centuries, is also renowned for its exquisite beverage selection; from an array of “very best Welsh, biodynamic and natural wines” to artisanal craft beers, classic real ales, and creative cocktails.

For those preferring a night away from stargazing, the estate extends an invitation to stay in one of their tastefully designed luxury accommodations. Options range from a graceful Georgian house complete with a wood-fired hot tub, a lavishly appointed apartment in Hawarden Castle’s wing, to a charmingly bespoke beekeeper’s hut.

Hawarden is more than just a campsite with top-notch facilities and a farm shop. It offers a variety of activities throughout the summer, including classes and workshops in the Walled Garden, walks, talks, and child-friendly activities.
