A 17-year-old boy in the United Kingdom was arrested on Friday (July 12) after he was suspected to be behind an attack at a Gurdwara in Kent. In a statement, the local police said that cops were called to the Sri Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Gravesend on Thursday evening to investigate reports that a male had entered the place of worship and attempted to assault those inside.

The police were called to the Siri Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara at around 8:10 pm (local time) on Thursday.

Nobody seriously injured in attack

“It was reported that a male had entered the location and attempted to assault those in attendance whilst armed with a bladed weapon,” the statement said.

It added, “Nobody was seriously injured during the incident but two women required medical attention for cuts and bruises.”

The police recovered the bladed weapon from the scene.

‘An isolated incident’

Thursday’s attack at the Gurdwara was described as an isolated incident by the police. The 17-year-old was arrested on the suspicion of attempted murder and a religiously aggravated public order offence, the police said, adding, that nobody else is currently being sought in connection with their investigation.

“We understand the community’s concerns in relation to the events at the gurdwara, however, we are treating it as an isolated incident,” said Detective Superintendent Ian Dyball of Kent Police.

“Patrols will remain in the area for reassurance and we thank the community for their ongoing support and assistance,” Dyball added.
