Namibian citizens have experienced significant hurdles in obtaining visas. Michelle Nehoya, a Namibian citizen, shared her frustrating experience of spending nearly $500 on a visa to visit Canada, only to face prolonged delays without explanation.

Impact on Tourism and Travelers

While the visa requirement may seem daunting, it may not significantly disrupt travel plans. Tourists can still obtain a 90-day visa on arrival in Namibia, simplifying the process for many. However, African passport holders will need to secure their visas in advance.

The Hospitality Association of Namibia has expressed concerns about the potential impact on tourism, which accounts for around 7% of Namibia’s GDP. As the third-largest contributor to the economy, tourism is vital, and any barriers could affect this sector.

Financial Implications of Visa Rejections

Interestingly, the UK and Schengen countries have been profiting from visa rejections. In 2023, the EU earned $139 million from Schengen visa rejections, with $58 million coming from African countries alone. Similarly, the UK made $56 million from rejected visa fees last year. The fees for these visas are non-refundable, adding to the financial burden on applicants.

Tourism experts believe that while the new visa requirements might seem cumbersome, they are manageable.
