Suki Waterhouse Is Done Playing The Relatable Mum

Must read

Suki Waterhouse posed in this month’s British Vogue in fringed Bottega Veneta coats, beatnik Gabriela Hearst dresses, ruffled Burberry slips and caped Simone Rocha gowns cut from featherweight organza and trimmed with substantial pelts of fuzz. She looked glamorous, this cover girl posing for the world’s most famous fashion magazine.

Less than 48 hours after that shoot dropped, Waterhouse was photographed in a cardigan, cargo pants and sliders, toting a drawstring bag overflowing with random ephemera. See also: the pyjama pants she was photographed in last month; the corduroys of her casual pregnancy wardrobe; and the sensible, if unremarkable, fleece she wore during her first public outing with Robert Pattinson back in 2018. Waterhouse’s relatable pap shots have often provided the antidote to a culture that expects its celebrities to curate catwalk-appropriate looks on a daily basis.

Until now. The musician was yesterday afternoon photographed strolling through Los Angeles in full-look Gucci: a thigh-skimming tunic cut from “rotten” green cashmere, platform brogues and a bamboo-handled bucket bag plucked from Sabato de Sarno’s autumn/winter 2024 collection. Waterhouse is, of course, at a new juncture in her life – motherhood, the release of a second album – and while there are obviously no rules to first-time parenthood, this look is a reminder that she was a famous person before she was pushing a pram around the park. “Suki can really wear ‘fashion’ pieces,” as Julia Sarr-Jamois, who styled Waterhouse’s cover shoot, put it. “I mean, she was a model before she was a musician.”
