Foreign Office issues huge warning to British tourists planning Portugal trips

The Foreign Office has issued a severe warning to British tourists planning to visit Portugal this summer in relation to the serious risks associated with water activities and hiking in the popular holiday destination.

As Portugal remains a top choice for UK holidaymakers, the advisory highlights a series of potential dangers that could pose significant risks to visitors.

In a recent statement, the Foreign Office cautioned travellers about the risks of drowning and injury related to swimming and beach activities. “Every year, people drown in the sea and in swimming pools in Portugal,” the advisory warned.

Tourists are urged to exercise extreme caution when near water, particularly on unsupervised beaches where unpredictable waves and strong undertows can be perilous.

The advisory urged visitors to avoid swimming at beaches linked to rivers or in areas without lifeguards, as hidden rocks or shallow waters can lead to serious injury.

The Foreign Office also warned of the dangers of rip tides, advising those caught in such currents to swim parallel to the shore until they escape the current before heading back to land.

In addition, it reminded tourists to respect beach safety flags, with red indicating danger and no swimming, yellow signalling caution with restricted swimming, and green meaning it is safe to swim.

Beyond beach activities, the advisory highlighted other hazards, including cliff erosion in the Algarve region, where falling rocks pose a significant risk.

Tourists are reminded that fines may be imposed for ignoring warning signs. Hiking enthusiasts are also advised to take extra precautions.

Portugal’s Madeira and Azores regions offer challenging hiking conditions, and the Foreign Office recommends choosing trails that match one’s fitness level and experience.

It is crucial to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and to exercise caution in wet conditions, as paths may become slippery.

Travellers are encouraged to inform hotel reception of their hiking plans, carry a mobile phone, and ideally, hike in groups or with a guide.
