Brits told to swap Barcelona and Benidorm for quiet city in northern Spain

Tourists are being urged to consider swapping trips to Barcelona and Benidorm for an underrated gem in northern Spain.

Vigo in Galicia is often overshadowed by more popular destinations, but one traveller has insisted it offers a more authentic taste of Spanish life.

Yzabelle Bostyn, a travel writer for The Olive Press, said visitors can enjoy a leisurely coffee and delicious pastry in one of the old town’s many charming cafes.

Unlike nearby Santiago which is often filled with tourists and students, Vigo remains relatively undiscovered and more laidback.

Tourists are free to explore its museums and shop at independent stores away from the crowds, Ms Bostyn explained.

It is also not far from province capital Pontevedra which is known for its hospitality and friendliness.

“These two cities in northern Spain are a must-add to your travel wishlist despite being missed by many tourists,” the travel expert said.

Both cities are located in the region famed the Camino Pilgrimage religious walk, with the latter welcoming hundreds of pilgrims every day.

But their tranquillity contrasts with recent protests in other parts of Spain.

Overtourism has sparked fury across the country with thousands of locals taking to the streets in popular cities like Barcelona.

In one instance, people were squirted with water pistols by angry campaigners demanding visitors “go home”.

The protests highlight growing concerns over the impact of mass tourism, particularly on housing and local communities.

In Barcelona, a recent demonstration saw 2,800 people march through the streets, calling for significantly reduced tourist numbers in the Catalonia capital.

One tourist who visited Vigo wrote on TripAdvisor said of the city’s Playa Samil beach: “This beach has such a beautiful view. Great boardwalk with roller skating park, two pools, and plenty of sitting areas. A couple of great restaurants right on the beach to grab a drink with a view.”
