Rocca Imperiale is one of the most picturesque medieval towns in Italy.
The landscape and the surrounding sea coupled with the heritage of the site make for a unique place to explore.
The village is located between Pollino National Park, the Sibari plain and the Metapontino area which means tourists can access Rocca Imperiale via many routes.
A famous food from the area is the lemon, which has been grown for centuries in the area and is an iconic part of the village’s history.
These lemons are unlike others with an intense yellow colour and a strong scent which distinguishes them.
Steeped in history, the Swabian Castle is the most significant part of history in the town, named the “most beautiful” in Italy.
The castle was built in a place of great military and strategic importance.
The construction of the castle was followed by the development of the town where people began to settle. In 1989 the last heirs of the family that owned the Castle decided to donate it to the municipality of Rocca Imperiale. While it may not hold the grandeur of some more modern castles, it’s history and age make it a must visit place.

One guest said: “This place is great, it’s quiet and clean. It is also located in the historic centre, very close to the castello walls. There is a beautiful sitting area on the piazza nearby, with a great view of the castello and surrounding countryside. The downstairs sofa bed was the most comfortable sofa bed I’ve ever slept in.”
