A multisport event dedicated to celebrating inclusivity will take place in Thatcham next week.

Kennet Leisure Centre is inviting children and adults with physical disabilities, learning or neurological conditions to take part in its Festival of Inclusivity on Friday, August 23 – the first event of its kind in West Berkshire.

The centre, operated by Everyone Active in partnership with West Berkshire Council, has teamed up with Sport Together Berkshire to host the event.

There will be something on offer for all ages and abilities, from wheelchair sports to boccia and new age curling.

Visitors will also be able to relax in the Sensory Room, hosted by accessible play charity Swings & Smiles.

West Berkshire’s executive member for culture, leisure, sport and countryside Nigel Foot (Lib Dem, Newbury Clay Hill) said: “There should be no barriers to accessing sport and physical activity, and this shows commitment to providing equal opportunities so everyone can enjoy the benefits of sport.”

Activity and wellbeing manager for Everyone Active, Callum Yates, added: “We are dedicated to creating opportunities where everyone feels valued and empowered to take part in physical activity.

“We hope to showcase our inclusive offering here at Kennet Leisure Centre and encourage the local community to try out something new.”

Everyone Active will be hosting a disability swim session from 2pm until 3pm.

And visitors will also be able to participate in a wheelchair rugby session in the afternoon, free of charge.

Co-founder of Sport Together Berkshire, Craig Hunter, said: “Without the support and like-minded attitude of Everyone Active and all our partners, including Swings & Smiles, this event would not be possible.

“We’re extremely grateful to Callum Yates and his team for working with us.

“We know events like these take time to establish, but we are confident this will become a regular event in families’ calendars.”
