Work has started on the first phase of a new multi-million pound sports facilities project in Stowmarket.

A new trim-trail will be installed at Chilton Fields later this week, as part of a wider project for improved facilities on land surrounding the site and Stowmarket High School.

Alongside the trim-trail there will be a new 3G pitch, multi-use games area, mini athletics track, active track, cricket nets and improvements to the existing fields.

The effort has been spearheaded by Mid Suffolk District Council, which has agreed to fund £450,000 towards the scheme, while it will also utilise grant funding from the National Lottery and Football Foundation.

Tim Weller, cabinet member for environment, culture and wellbeing, said: “I am delighted the first work on this exciting project is getting under way.

“This scheme has lots of elements and it will take time to deliver them all – but it is great to get the ball rolling.

“These plans are ambitious and we are confident they will be a great benefit for people in Stowmarket and neighbouring areas.”

The project aims to address health inequalities across the district and in particular in Chilton Ward.

The project is estimated to cost £2.4 million in total.
