Sports reporter

Must read

We are looking for a journalist to revolutionise our sports coverage.

Based in Worcester – writing for the daily Worcester News as well as the Malvern Gazette and Evesham Reporter – this role is a rare opportunity to enter the world of sports reporting.

Our readers love reading about local sports clubs on our websites and in our newspapers, but this role requires a new approach with no major club on our patch.

As well as traditional match reports for our local clubs we also need to engage our readers with fresh content online, in our papers and on social media.

From minute-by-minute live reporting of Worcester City Football Club to youth sport, angling and nostalgia – the role covers a diverse range of subjects.

The successful candidate will be confident enough to sniff out the news stories associated with sports clubs as well as reporting the action on the pitch.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent knowledge of sports that allows them to produce live coverage of football, rugby and cricket
  • The skills to know what readers want to read, using both keen news sense and data insights
  • An understanding of search engine optimisation (SEO) and skills in producing content that works in search
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • The ability to write – and think – quickly under pressure
  • Excellent social media skills and the ability to spot stories and trending topics
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant media law

This role would suit a trainee reporter.
