Sky Sports make Todd Cantwell hurdle claim to have Rangers sweating in ASAP transfer need

Must read

Rangers are pushing hard to move players out the door so that space and money can be freed up for Philippe Clement.

The manager will have targets lined up as the clock ticks down but knows that the likes of Ianis Hagi and Todd Cantwell will have to leave Ibrox if he is to get the squad that he wants.

Cantwell looks close to a move to Blackburn Rovers, however, Sky Sports have revealed that there is still a sizeable hurdle to overcome.

Rangers wait on Todd Cantwell to make Blackburn decision

A fee has reportedly been agreed with the Championship outfit who are happy to entertain either a permanent or loan move.

Unfortunately, Cantwell is yet to agree personal terms, an issue that Clement can do nothing about.

When asked earlier in the transfer window if failing to move players on like Cantwell would give him a headache, he said:

“It’s going to be very difficult (to add to the squad if they don’t leave) I think, yes.

“It has to do with money. It has to do with high wages from the past and replacing them with players with lower wages to do something for now and for the future of the club.

“I don’t know which bids come in, I really don’t know because I’m not interested in that because I’m busy with the squad.

“There’s no reason for me to know every bid that comes in for a player or for what amount because I’m not the one who makes the decision about the money in the club.”

Rangers transfer need rests on Cantwell exit

With Ianis Hagi looking increasingly likely to stay at Rangers after his impassioned plea on social media, selling Cantwell has become a priority.

This time last summer, Rangers had too many number 10s, now, they don’t have enough and need an immediate upgrade in quality too.

Cantwell isn’t expected to bring in a big fee, however, what he will do is free up a lot of money on the wage bill.

Of all the players who have been linked recently, there has been no sign of an out and out playmaker despite Cantwell – and Hagi – having been told that they can leave Rangers earlier in the summer.

Selling players isn’t easy, especially when they are on big wages and aren’t performing at a value for money ratio in terms of their demands.

Philippe Clement, and Nils Koppen, will be praying that Todd Cantwell can park his ego if Blackburn offer less than he is currently on.

Too many bridges have been burnt to entertain a return.
