The results are in – Skills crisis continues to loom over the UK

Every August, young people across the country face the culmination of years of educational preparation – opening letters on exam results day.

With university enrolment or a place on an apprenticeship scheme on the line, for many results day will simply represent one step along the path of full, or part-time education. But for others, the day constitutes the conclusion of their educational journeys.

Last week, the Financial Times released an in-depth report into the severity of the UK’s skills crisis and its causes. Among other findings, the article cites analysis by the Learning and Work Institute, which outlined the full impact of the reduction in investment in adult skills training since 2009.

Since 2009, government investment in adult education has fallen by more than 25% per person, and employer funding decreased by 20%. Few, if any, industries have avoided the impact of these funding shortfalls, and the tech sector is no different….
