Bucket hats boom as Oasis takes fashion back to Britpop Britain

Must read

Oasis are back on, but do you have your bucket hat at the ready?

Fashion’s (at times tiresome) obsession with nineties-cum-noughties style has ensured Liam Gallagher’s headpiece of choice has never gone too far out of the mainstream. Any festival-goers this summer — be it Glastonbury, All Points East or, even, the local beer fair — will have borne witness to a flood of Carhartt navy blue and PrettyLittleThing candy floss faux fur iterations. And for better or worse, more are set to come.

The style – which originated as the humble Irish walking hat in the early 1900s before evolving into military wear, a fashion statement in the Sixties and Seventies, and, later, a solidifying staple of Nineties Britpop Britain thanks to Blur and Oasis — is truly set to boom again. At Depop, trend expert Agus Panzoni says “the announcement of Oasis’ reunion tour perfectly taps into the enduring appeal of Nineties nostalgia — Kangol bucket hats have seen a 16 per cent increase in searches since the start of the year, while parkas have skyrocketed by 96 per cent since July.”

Kangol remains a go-to for affordable buckets — just £12 from Sports Direct. Mad for it, etc. Elsewhere, Ralph Lauren, Carhartt and Barbour (the latter is son of Liam, Lennon Gallagher’s, first choice) all have reliable, inoffensive options in neutral tones. For the more fashion inclined, Bottega Veneta do a very posh version in their signature Intrecciato leather, Moncler offer a pop of puffer-yellow while Burberry do a plethora in variations of the classic Nova check, as modelled by Brad Pitt at this year’s British Grand Prix.

As for the SS25 collections (which will hit the shelves in time to see Oasis live ‘25), Kim Jones sent out knitted bucket hats with a beaded trim during his Dior Men’s collection. Dunhill, Homme Plissé Issey Miyake and MSGM also all showed similarly tempting styles coming soon.
