Mamma Mia! This beautiful little Greek island could be your perfect paradise if you’re after a sneaky September getaway.
As the weather begins to cool in the UK many Brits will wistfully begin to think about warmer climates.
Greece is always a popular holiday escape from Britain – and one little island has gorgeous weather even after the summer rush with an average September temperature around a balmy 25C with a top daytime temperature of 27C.
But what the pretty island of Skiathos in the northwest Aegean Sea is really famous for is as a backdrop to the hugely popular film Mamma Mia!
It boasts an astonishing 60 beaches with shimmering blue waters as well as pine forests. There is also a buzzing nightlife with an array of foodie hot spots, bars and clubs.
Due to the location of its international runway, beachgoers on the island can also expect to witness commercial jets flying just metres above their heads.
Greek tourism website Visit Greece explained more about the island which is said was “paradise on earth”.
Visit Greece said: “Skiathos, the most cosmopolitan island in the Northern Sporades, is truly a paradise on earth, with lush pine forests and crystal-clear azure waters. The island is picturesque, unspoilt and blessed with more than 60 beautifully crystal clear waters and beaches.
“The most famous is Koukounaries, which is considered as the third most beautiful beach in the Mediterranean. When you add in its bustling nightlife, it is only natural that the island attracts thousands of young visitors every year!”
It’s a firm favourite with travel bloggers too with one happy visitor calling the island “postcard perfect.”
Lynsey from travel blog lynseysnotebook.co.uk said: “For my first introduction to Greece, Skiathos could not have been more perfect.
“I took ages to decide where I wanted to visit for my first trip to Greece – Rhodes and Zante both looked beautiful – but Skiathos has an authentic charm that I couldn’t resist.”
She added: “While Mamma Mia certainly put Skiathos on the map, it still retains its authenticity and simplicity.”
Others have taken to travel review website Tripadvisor to share their thoughts about this stunning location.
One said that Koukounaries Beach has “got to be the best beach in Greece”.
