9 affordable ‘less-explored’ countries to visit in 2024 – and two are in Europe

Travel costs have soared this year with summer trips up by an average of seven percent year-on-year compared to 2023.

This means budget-conscious explorers are looking for alternative destinations that offer unique experiences without depleting their savings

Now, a new study has uncovered affordable countries that offer adventures at a fraction of the cost. Jason Higgs, senior deals strategist at Bountii, has compiled a list of nine countries that provide value for money and offer insights into destinations often overlooked by mainstream tourism. 

Higgs said: “Our research shows that some of the most rewarding travel experiences can be found in less-explored corners of the world. These destinations offer significant savings while also providing authentic cultural immersion and stunning natural beauty.”

1. Albania

This Balkan treasure boasts stunning mountain landscapes, charming coastal towns, and a rich cultural heritage. 

From the historic city of Berat to the picturesque Albanian Riviera, Albania offers a wealth of experiences at a fraction of the cost of its European neighbours. 

Daily costs: £22-£30

Niggs says: “In Albania, you can expect to spend between £22 and £30 on average daily, including accommodation, transportation, and food. Meals of delicious Mediterranean cuisine like lamb, cheese, and seafood are very inexpensive.”

2. Bhutan

Known for its unique culture, stunning Himalayan landscapes, and commitment to sustainable tourism, Bhutan is a true delight for those seeking an off-the-tourist trail adventure. 

Daily costs: £38-£53

Higgs said: “While not the cheapest destination on this list, Bhutan offers an unforgettable experience at a relatively affordable cost. Sustainable low-impact tourism is prioritised.”

3. Bolivia

Boasting diverse landscapes, from the stunning Salar de Uyuni salt flats to the vibrant city of La Paz, Bolivia is a budget traveller’s paradise.

“With accommodation and food costs in Bolivia being incredibly low, you can immediately explore this South American gem on £15-£22 per day,” Higgs explained.

4. Kyrgyzstan

Nestled in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan is a true hidden beauty for adventure seekers. With its breathtaking mountain ranges, pristine lakes, and nomadic culture, this country offers a unique and affordable travel experience.

Higgs added: “Expect to spend around £15-£22 per day, including stays in traditional yurt camps and local cuisine. You can even find filling meals for just £1.50-£2.20.”

5. Gabon

This West African nation is a true marvel for nature lovers, boasting pristine rainforests, diverse wildlife, and stunning beaches. 

Daily costs: £30-£38

Jason says: “With its relatively low tourism numbers, Gabon offers an authentic and affordable travel experience. You can comfortably explore this country for £30-£38 per day.”

6. Bosnia and Herzegovina

This Balkan nation is a melting pot of cultures, with a fascinating blend of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Slavic influences. From the historic city of Mostar to the stunning Lukomir village, Bosnia and Herzegovina offers a rich tapestry of experiences at a budget-friendly price.
