The world’s ‘most overcrowded’ country has three tourists to every local

Must read

The most overcrowded tourist destination in the world has been named – and the location may suprise you. While a destination in Asia was the most crowded tourist hotspot, this European country has been declared as the most crowded overall.

Research conducted by MoneyTransfers.com found that Austria had 3.6 tourists for every local resident, making it the most overcrowded tourist destination. The country gets around 32 million annual visitors, despite the fact it has a population of just 8.9 million.

The capital city, Vienna, is the most popular destination for tourists. The ‘City of Dreams’ attracts holidaymakers from across the globe, and it is known for its beautiful views and outstanding architecture.

Vienna is also home to the Schronbunn Palace, the Vienna Opera House, and the Museum of Natural History. However, while Vienna is big enough to cope with its high visitor numbers, others parts of the country are bursting at the seams.

The quaint lakeside village of Hallstatt has seen protests against tourists, as locals attempt to stop visitors. The village has been frequented by Disney fans after it was named as inspiration for the popular movie Frozen.

Tourists visit the village’s viewpoints to take selfies but last year staff erected a fence to block the view. This attempt to stop tourists from taking so many photos was supported by locals who took to the streets to protest.

Locals were also concerned about the increase in vehicles in the region, which was causing traffic jams and congestion.

If you’re still looking to explore Austria, Graz could be an option. The second largest city doesn’t get nearly as many visitors, and is fondly known as the ‘Capital of Culinary Delights’.

The city of Salzburg is also a favourite while Innsbruck has been named one of Europe’s hidden gems.
