Olympic gold medallist Ros Canter has won the the first Burghley Horse Trials title of her career.
The 38-year-old reigning European individual eventing champion was part of Great Britain’s triumphant team in Paris alongside Laura Collett and Tom McEwen.
And a clear showjumping round – just four seconds over time – on her Paris ride Lordships Graffalo sealed victory with 23.6 penalties at Burghley.
New Zealand’s Tim Price, with 29.5 on Vitali, finished second with Britain’s Harry Meade and Cavalier Crystal third. He also took fourth on Annaghmore Valoner.
Canter lands £110,000 for winning, adding to the 2023 Badminton title she won with the same horse, who is nicknamed Walter.
“It means everything,” said Canter. “I’ve achieved a lot – I’ve been lucky – so I came into this year and the Olympics was that one big box to tick, so in some ways it made me a bit flat afterwards.
“I came into this week and I didn’t need it, but I really wanted it. I’ve had a good feeling all week, although I’ve not told anybody. I’ve felt confident, felt brave to go out there and be myself.”
Her individual hopes in Paris were ended after controversially receiving 15 penalties in the cross-country.
