Must read

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, cut a stylish figure at a British Fashion Council event today ahead of the start of London Fashion Week tomorrow.

The royal, 59, who is often seen in maxi dresses and florals, made a statement in a more tailored look as she presented the British Fashion Council’s Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design at the Royal Academy of Arts in central London.

Sophie, the wife of Prince Edward, 60, opted for a pair of tweed, wide-leg trousers featuring patch pockets and a V-neck, burgundy blouse with blouson sleeves.

The mother-of-two completed her autumnal ensemble with patent black pointed toe shoes and a patent clutch bag.

Sophie wore her blond hair brushed back behind her ears to reveal a pair of gold earrings with dainty, dark red gemstones attached.

The Duchess beamed as she presented the British Fashion Council’s Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design to 27-year-old London-based menswear designer Steven Stokey-Daley.

The award took the form of a tall, silver vase decorated with coloured roses and leaves.

Previous winners of the award, which was set up ‘in recognition of the role the industry plays in society and diplomacy’, include Richard Quinn – who received the award from Queen Elizabeth II in 2018 – Saul Nash and Priya Ahluwalia.

The award equally aims to turn the spotlight on young designers who are making a difference to society through either sustainable practices or community engagement.

Steven Stokey-Daley, who worked on menswear collections at Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford before setting up his SS Daley label, has built up a celebrity following, with fans including popstar Harry Styles – who even invested in the brand.

Sophie also greeted other attendees, including the chief executive of the British Fashion Council Caroline Rush CBE and BBC radio broadcaster and TV presenter Clara Amfo.

While Caroline opted for a bottle green dress and wrap, Clara chose a turquoise shirt with a green pattern for the occasion.

Earlier in September, Sophie attended a Paralympics Equestrian event in Versailles near Paris.

The Duchess appeared in high spirits as she smiled for the cameras alongside Prince Edward.

Focused on the sporting events, the royal couple cheered on Team GB from the stands.

Sophie wore a floaty, black dress embroidered with daisy print for the Games.

She accessorised her demure ensemble with a pair of gold hoop earrings and chic, oversized sunglasses.

Her blow-dired hair was pinned back, providing her with a clear view of the action.

Prince Edward, meanwhile, was dressed casually in a blue gingham shirt, a black blazer and navy suit trousers.

He showed his support for the Games with a navy Paralympics and added sunglasses.

Britain’s Grade V team were in tenth place, behind the USA and Italy. Norway, the Netherlands and Germany occupied the top spots.
