This summer, many Brits will have spent their holidays in Spain. With impressive cities and beaches, the rich gastronomy and the good weather, Spain is the ideal destination for British tourists. But it seems that the landscapes and good atmosphere are not the only things that leave them amazed. Spanish supermarkets can be a tourist destination too.
A British tourist who went on holiday to Spain took a trip to a local supermarket to see what it was like, and was truly baffled by what she found. Georgia was visisting Marbella for a few days with friends, and they decided to take a trip to the supermarket chain Mercadona. Documenting the trip on TikTok, the young woman shared the products that caught her attention the most – and they were completely different to what she would expect in the UK.
Taking to her @‌georgiacluttonbaxter account, she showed her followers around the shop. First, her friend picked up a huge jar of olives, and a bottle of ‘lovely Sunny D juice, which she said is a “staple”. Then she went to the confectionery section, where she was amazed by all the sweets she found. “I wish they had cakes like this in British supermarkets. They’re American-style. Look how big they are,” she said.
She then filmed an employee riding a machine to clean the floor of the aisles. However, it seemed the content creator was a bit confused and thinks she has a different job. “People go around with lawnmowers!,” she said, while her friend laughed. However, one viewer informed her: “It is not a lawnmower, it is a machine for cleaning the floor.”
Georgia also pointed out the meat counter in the shop, and said they had a “full animal” on display. Over by the fruit and vegetable section, Georgia was shocked by the size of the red peppers. “They’re the biggest we’ve ever seen,” she said. The tourist picked one up with her hands and placed it next to her friend’s head to compare the size.
However, because she did this without wearing gloves, some of her followers considered it to be unhygienic. “To touch fruit and vegetables you have to wear gloves, they are not there as decoration,” wrote one woman.
Following the criticism, the British woman posted another video on TikTok in which she showed other customers picking up fruits and vegetables with their hands to justify that she is not the only one who has done this. Despite this being true, people have still told her that the right thing to do is to wear gloves.
Other social media users also raved about the supermarket chain, with one person saying: “Mercadona such is top tier. One of the reasons I moved here.” Another added: “I just went to England and food culture is so different.”
“WOW… REAL FOOD!!,” commented someone else, while another added: “What do you think of real food, girls?”
