Newcastle United transfer news: England international open to 2025 Magpies move?

Must read

Newcastle United are reportedly handed a boost in their efforts to sign an England international during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United have reportedly been provided with a boost ahead of their efforts to sign new players in 2025.

Having missed out on European football for 2024-25, manager Eddie Howe was eager to enjoy a productive summer transfer window.

However, that was only achieved to a certain degree, with the permanent purchase of Lewis Hall from Chelsea – arranged months in advance – and acquiring free agent Lloyd Kelly their standout pieces of business.

The Magpies have since started the new campaign by accumulating 10 points from a possible 12 in the Premier League, only conceding three goals in the process.

Nevertheless, Eddie Howe has publicly admitted to being left frustrated with the outcome of some of their interest, most notably in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Newcastle receive Gomes boost

While the North-East outfit may return for Guehi at a later date, recent speculation has emerged regarding a potential approach for Angel Gomes.

Having just started his fourth campaign at Lille, the former Manchester United youngster has established himself as a key man, contributing eight goals and 18 assists from his 120 appearances.

Frequently impressing in Ligue 1 has led to an international bow with England, the 24-year-old being handed a start for the recent UEFA Nations League fixture versus Finland.

His progression has naturally led to admirers in the Premier League, Newcastle among those who would jump at the chance to try to negotiate a deal.

According to Football Insider, Gomes is contemplating whether to try his luck in England’s top flight from 2025 onwards.

With less than a year remaining on his Lille contract, Gomes will soon be in a position to hold formal discussions with foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement.

Realistically speaking, as he did when at Man United, the diminutive playmaker is likely to take that opportunity rather than commit himself to a new deal at this stage.

A point to prove?

Given the time that he spent in the Man United academy ranks, Gomes would have ideally liked to be handed a consistent chance in the first team at Old Trafford.

Instead, just 320 minutes of action came from 10 appearances, only 46 of those minutes being spent on the pitch in Premier League fixtures.

Gomes was not used for longer than 16 minutes in any of those five outings, but he will expect to command a regular starting spot if he does move back to England.

On the flip side, Gomes will not want to risk losing his place in the England squad, leaving him to find an appropriate balance when deciding on the next phase of his career.

Liverpool are another team who are said to be contemplating whether to make a bid for Gomes’ services.
