Autumn has arrived, the nights are getting darker and the temperature is plummeting, which means now is the perfect time to book a holiday to travel somewhere spectacular.

Dubrovnik is a charming coastal city located in Croatia along the Adriatic Sea that has been nicknamed the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ due to its remarkable beauty.

Most people will recognise the city as a filming location from Games of Thrones as scenes set in Kings Landing are filmed in Dubrovnik as it is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture.

However, outside of its television fame Dubrovnik is stunning as it is surrounded by lush green hills and crystal clear blue waters which makes the city’s district red rooftops stand out even more.

What makes Dubrovnik a great destination to visit this autumn is that the average temperature in October is expected to be 22C so it will be comfortable enough to sightsee and still enjoy the warm sunny weather.

CN Traveller has also named Dubrovnik as their number-one destination for anyone wishing to enjoy the sun now that summer has ended.

They said: “On the coast of Croatia’s southern tip, Dubrovnik just about earns the title of a winter-sun destination. In October, the charming Old Town is brought to life, with its red-roofed homes and medieval fortress glowing in the golden autumn sunlight.”

What is there to do in Dubrovnik in October?

The most popular tourist attraction in Dubrovnik is the massive city’s medieval walls which take an hour and a half to completely walk around and are known for their breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea at sunset.

Dubrovnik is the perfect place for food lovers as in October the city celebrates their annual Good Food Festival for two weeks, where there will be food tastings, wine tastings, cooking competitions and workshops where visitors can learn how to make local dishes.

Since it is right next to the sea Dubrovnik is known for its fresh seafood and has also greatly been influenced by Mediterranean dishes such as pašticada, a marinated beef stew and also rozata, a creamy custard pudding.

Anyone who is looking to enjoy the sun should also visit Banje Beach, one of the city’s most popular spots by day it is a beautiful beach but by night it transforms into a nightclub so you can have fun dancing the night away.

However,  there are also many gorgeous beaches surrounding the city such as Dance Beach, Pasjaca Beach and Sveti Javoc Beach so you can have a quiet time at the seaside if that is what you would prefer.

If you are someone who loves to explore then you will enjoy Dubrovnik as it is right next to Cavtat, a charming village known for its history and beaches that is only a 30-minute bus ride away from the city.

Another fascinating place close by is Lokrum Island known for its botanical gardens, nudist beaches and peacocks which often be seen that are allowed to freely roam.

Those who enjoy Halloween will like visiting this pretty island in October as it is also known for having a curse placed on it by monks to protect it and it is said that anyone who tries to disturb Lokrum’s natural beauty will face misfortune.

Dubrovnik will also be a wonderful autumn holiday destination as the tourist season is winding down so you can enjoy the city without having to worry about the hustle and bustle of crowds.

A flight from London to Dubrovnik is typically between two and a half hours to three hours, so you can be in this incredible European city in no time and enjoy escaping the cold British weather for a little while.
