How to fix Sky Glass smart TV after update glitch

Thousands of Sky Glass owners were left unable to watch television after a dodgy update caused problems.

The update to their smart TV, which automatically downloaded, meant the television simply wouldn’t turn on.

And the problem isn’t limited to Sky Glass either, as Sky Stream, the pucks which can be plugged into other televisions, is also affected.

The problem was first reported yesterday, with Sky saying: ‘We are sorry that some Sky Glass and Stream customers are currently experiencing issues when trying to switch on their devices.’

But thankfully there’s a relatively simple fix which can bring your telly back to life if it’s not turning on.

Sky has a full guide on its website to ‘manually restart’ the TV in order to fix the issue.

It is done by turning off the TV at the mains, and then pressing and holding the standby button that is found at the bottom right hand side of the TV.

While holding that button, the TV should be switched on – and then the button can be un-pressed when the LEDs flash, which might take 20 seconds.

The Sky TV should then complete a recovery process that should bring it back to life. That could take up to 15 minutes on slower internet connections.

The TV should then run its owner through a setup process that will bring the TV back online.

Both Glass and Stream are part of Sky’s move to provide programming over the internet instead of through the satellite dishes which characterised its business over the years.

Sky Glass televisions integrate the company’s software, meaning watchers navigate using Sky’s own menus, although it can take external inputs as well.

Any software updates are sent to the television and automatically downloaded and installed without the owner having to do anything.

When all goes well, this means people will be able to use new features as soon as they next turn the TV – but in this case, the update has caused problems.
