It’s Erik ten Hag’s third season at Manchester United and social media remains littered with cries of #TenHagOut.
One win in nine European games is a calamity. Just three victories this season – against Fulham, Southampton and Barnsley – isn’t much better.
So, it’s understandable that discontent is growing among the fanbase.
United’s new ownership have offered reasons to be optimistic about the club’s future – regardless of the manager.
I was all for INEOS opting to retain and back Ten Hag in the summer. Two trophies in as many years – following six years of no silverware – can’t be sniffed at.
For the most part, the Dutchman is a likeable character with a blatant passion for football. He possesses traits of a successful United manager, and I still have faith his vision will be realised.
Ten Hag’s desired style of play – a possession-based game with full-backs heavily involved in the build-up – has come through this season.
His demands of control are finally being answered. United have looked improved on the ball and off it – although the bar wasn’t high – and plenty of chances have been created.
But no team has missed more big chances than his side’s 17 in the opening five Premier League games. And performances won’t matter if fortunes in front of goal and results don’t change for the better.
Wednesday’s draw at home to FC Twente was the latest reminder that United are still way off. Ten Hag insists it’s a process – but patience is wearing thin. I’m holding out hope, for now. But ask me again at Christmas…
