Thousands of households around the UK could be entitled to free cash – but locals in some areas have been urged to act fast as they have just days left to claim.
The scheme could see many people secure £200 in free financial support to help with energy and shopping bills.
The cost-of-living support scheme, known as the Household Support Fund (HSF), has been extended for the sixth time, but eligible Brits must apply soon to benefit.
Originally established by the Government in 2021 to aid those struggling with rising inflation, the fund has become a lifeline for many during the cost-of-living crisis.
At the height of the crisis, average annual energy bills soared above £4,000 under the Ofgem price cap, intensifying financial pressure on households.
Initially set to run for just six months, the HSF has been renewed in every Budget since.
The latest extension pushes the scheme’s deadline from next week to Spring 2025, with an additional £421 million allocated between October 2024 and April 2025.
While funding is provided by the Department for Work and Pensions, local councils are responsible for administering and distributing the aid, meaning deadlines and eligibility criteria vary by region.
In Birmingham, households have only a few days left to apply for up to £200, which can be used for “essential goods” like water.
Applications can be made by completing the Hardship Grant Community Fund form on the council’s website.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a Birmingham resident
- Be experiencing “financial hardship” related to essential costs
- Not have received a £200 grant payment in the last 12 months
Applications close on Monday, September 30.
