Evesham United suffer narrow 2-1 defeat to Bideford

Must read

Despite a goal from Levi Steele in Devon at the Sports Ground on Saturday (September 28), goals from Finn Roberts and Jack Winsor were too much for the Robins to overcome.

Evesham were faster out the blocks, with efforts from Reegan Messenger and Steele denied by some stellar goalkeeping from Bideford’s Michael Searle.

Roberts broke the deadlock in the 28th minute with an outstanding volley from just outside the box that left Alex Harris helpless.

Minutes later the hosts doubled their lead, when Winsor was on target with a low shot across goal.

Though Steele and Amer Awadh rallied for Evesham, their efforts went wide, leaving Bideford two goals up as the half-time whistle blew.

The second half saw a renewed performance from the Robins.

After Harris denied Alexander Moyse and Ryan Turner, Steele at last managed to get his goal, getting in behind and finishing low past Searle in the 68th minute to give Evesham some hope with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Ethan Moran came close to scoring the leveller, while Bideford also had some opportunities saved and go wide.

Winsor gave Evesham some late hope when he was sent off for kicking the ball away in the 89th minute, however Bideford were let off the hook, with the visitors’ best effort in the remaining minutes hitting the post.

The victory was Bideford first home league win of the season, while Evesham reflected and reassessed ahead of their away clash with Didcot Town last night (Tuesday, October 1) at 7.45pm.

The Robins will return to The Spiers & Hartwell Stadium on Saturday (October 5), when they will compete against Westbury United at 3pm.
