Shoppers are being encouraged to support local high streets and businesses through a new campaign.

Discover Charnwood, the borough’s destination brand, and Charnwood Borough Council have launched the Shop Charnwood campaign to showcase businesses and encourage people to shop more locally.

Discover Charnwood is calling on businesses to get involved and be featured as part of the campaign which will be shared across social media and email newsletters.

A campaign web page has been created on the Discover Charnwood website and there will be promotions of businesses shared over the coming weeks.

Residents can nominate businesses to feature and also support local businesses in many different ways which doesn’t necessarily mean making a purchase – businesses can be supported through sharing social media content, leaving a positive review and spreading the word about them to friends and family.

Chris Grace, head of economic development and regeneration at Charnwood Borough Council, said: “I am really pleased to see the Shop Charnwood campaign launch which will create a platform to showcase some of the great high streets and local businesses we have here in Charnwood.

“It’s no secret high streets are changing but we have some great businesses and we want to shout about them.

“Local businesses and high streets also offer something unique that you cannot always experience online – they are on hand to answer questions, offer great products and guide you through making a purchase.

“They are often at the centre of the community and also a welcoming place to go for a chat whilst browsing the shop.

“We need our local high streets and businesses and they need you, so I encourage residents to follow and support the Shop Charnwood campaign.”

The campaign is being supported by Love Loughborough BID and manager Lisa Brown said: “We are supporting the Shop Charnwood campaign to encourage people to shop locally and back their local high streets.

“Independent shops offer great value and products so where you can, please consider shopping local and supporting Charnwood businesses.”

Tom Williams and Lisa Chirico, owners of Riverside Reptiles in Sileby said: “As local business owners, support from this campaign and from local residents is vitally important to us. We are really happy to support this campaign as it highlights the many great businesses that we have across Charnwood.”

Kia Maine, owner of bespoke furniture business Wood n Brush Co, based in Mountsorrel, said: “I love that the Council and Discover Charnwood are doing this, because people want a good choice of shops on their high street and hopefully that’s coming back now.

“We’ve got to support our local communities, haven’t we? And if you can get whatever you need locally then why go elsewhere?”
