Why will Lee Carsley remain in charge of England despite Thomas Tuchel arrival?

Lee Carsley is set to continue as England interim manager despite the imminent arrival of Thomas Tuchel, according to report.

Lee Carsley is allegedly set to continue as England interim manager despite the imminent arrival of Thomas Tuchel.

According to multiple reports, Tuchel has reached an agreement with the Football Association to become England’s new permanent head coach after a ‘rapid conclusion’ to negotiations.

A press conference with FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has been scheduled at Wembley at 1.30pm on Wednesday when official confirmation of Tuchel’s appointment is set to be made.

Tuchel, who has been out of work since leaving his post at Bayern Munich at the end of last season, has been the man chosen by the FA to succeed Gareth Southgate, who resigned from his post in July following England’s Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain.

In August, Carsley was placed in interim charge of the Three Lions and has since overseen four matches in the UEFA Nations League, winning three and losing one in disappointing fashion by a 2-1 scoreline at home to Greece earlier this month.

Tuchel to begin England job in January 2025?

Carsley, who has never clearly expressed whether he would like to take the England job on a full-time basis, is set to see his short-term reign come to an end with the appointment of Tuchel, but he will not be departing just yet.

According to BBC Sport, Carsley will remain in interim charge for England’s final two Nations League matches away against Greece on November 14 and at home to the Republic of Ireland three days later, with Tuchel set to formally take over after that.

A separate report from Sky Sports in Germany claims that Tuchel has signed an 18-month deal that will see him start his new role as England boss on January 1, 2025.

As soon as the New Year comes around, Carsley is set to revert to his head coach role with England Under-21s.

Carsley has consistently made it clear that his remit was to take charge of all six of England’s Nations League matches between September and November as the FA search for a permanent successor.

England captain Kane: “Tuchel is a fantastic coach”

Although Tuchel is without a job and is seemingly available to begin right away, Three Lions supporters will have to wait a little while longer before they can see the ex-Chelsea boss on the international touchline for the first time in his career.

The appointment of Tuchel, who has been linked with the Manchester United job in recent weeks, as England boss will see him reunite with Bayern Munich captain Harry Kane, who has labelled the German a “fantastic coach”.

Speaking to Sky Sports News on Tuesday afternoon, England captain Kane said: “I haven’t been told anything. Until it is announced I can’t really comment, but obviously I know Thomas well from last year.

“He is a fantastic coach, a fantastic person. I’m sure the guys at the FA will contact me when they know more about it.”

Tuchel, who is set to become just the third non-English manager to take charge of the senior men’s England team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello, has won a total of 11 trophies at club level, including league titles at both Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern, as well as the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in charge of Chelsea.
