Prime Minister recognises Teesside’s “unique potential” for jobs

Must read

Prime Minister Keir Starmer today recognised Teesside’s “unique potential” for new industries, following the announcement of £22bn landmark investment for carbon capture in the region. The comments came in response to a question from Teesside MP Luke Myer, who welcomed the investment during Prime Minister’s Questions and pushed the Prime Minister to recognise the region’s potential.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Luke Myer MP asked:

“I welcome the government’s historic investment in Carbon Capture and Storage Technology for Teesside and Merseyside. This week I’ve been at the sector’s conference, and the feeling there is that this is a government delivering after years of delay. Will the Prime Minister recognise the unique potential that Teesside has for jobs, prosperity and economic growth into the future.”

The Prime Minister responded with:

“Yes. And Mr. Speaker, you would have observed that on Monday we had a very successful Investment Summit; £63 billion coming into this country, jobs in every part of the UK and a very clear message from business that they are prepared to invest now under this new Labour government. Part of that was our £22 billion commitment to CCUS, creating the first clusters in the world including, as he points out, in these various parts of the country. So we’ll support these jobs, we’ll support these investments, we will grow our economy and rebuild our country.”

The investment is set to create thousands of green jobs in the region and solidify Teesside’s position as a key player in the UK’s transition to net zero.

Following the exchange, Luke Myer MP said:

“I’m proud to see this recognition of Teesside’s potential and a strong commitment to our future. This government’s latest announcements, including this investment, affirm that Teesside is an economic driver, and a hub for innovation and jobs.”
