UK travel advisory for 18 countries: What if you can’t avoid travel?

Must read

After the recent airstrikes by Israel against Iran, the UK government has updated the travel advisory for 18 countries. They have advised citizens against travelling to tourist spots in this region. Syria, Cyprus, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Israel, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. According to the advisory, travel insurance can also get invalidated if citizens travel to these countries against the advice of the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office). On October 1, Iran launched 200 missiles at Israel. This was followed by Israel’s military action on October 26. There is also a separate warning for Turkey following the terrorist attack on October 23, in which 5 people died.

If you can’t avoid travel to the region, here’s what you should do. Take these proactive measures to minimise risks:
Be aware
Ensure you regularly check foreign offices’ travel advice pages to be aware of any potential threats. The situation can change rapidly, so stay constantly updated.
Avoid crowded areas
Stay away from large gatherings and demonstration sites, especially near government buildings and areas popular for political demonstrations.
Travel Insurance
Have a clear understanding of what is covered in your travel insurance. In this specific instance, the FCDO has already said that travel insurance can be invalidated if citizens travel to these countries. Therefore, be aware of alternate options or arrangements.
Be in touch with dear and near in the UK and give them a proper idea about your day-to-day itinerary, change of travel plans, possible unrests and difficulties.
Be aware of local conduct
Middle Eastern countries often have strict codes of conduct for public behaviour. Be aware of these rules and follow them respectfully. Do not disrespect local customs or invite unnecessary attention to yourself.
