Rangers haven’t quite hit rock bottom, however, having played almost every team in the Scottish Premiership, be in third place, and nine points behind second, is far from acceptable.
Philippe Clement’s position as manager is hanging by a thread, and he will be hoping that the Premier Sports Cup brings some respite from league disappointment.
Motherwell will be no easy opponents but with Clement not giving an injury update in his pre-match press conference, Rangers fans have been left in the dark once again.
Rangers injury list to face Motherwell
At Pittodrie, the Belgian was unable to call upon what is arguably his first-choice forward line.
Casting an eye to the bench too, and there is a case for the players who didn’t start being able to form a stronger team than the one Clement fielded.
The current injury status of the squad is unclear with the last update being:
- Unavailable: Ridvan Yilmaz, Rabbi Matondo, Danilo, Vaclav Cerny and Oscar Cortes
Here is what the Rangers boss said on Tuesday about the condition of his squad:
“Oscar Cortes still not, but in a good way doing his rehab.
“Rabbi Matondo also still not, but also in a good way, doing already warm ups with the team and then being outside with the physios.
“Ridvan Yilmaz doing some parts of the training with the squad but not fit enough yet.
“And Danilo on his way back, not as his best form of course, but he’s getting better and better.”
Matondo, Danilo and Ridvan have all been seen in the training ground footage recently with the latter two closer to returning to action.
Danilo played 60 minutes for the B team recently, but Ridvan will need a slow reintroduction to competitive football.
Does Clement deserve praise for not rushing players back?
Rangers tactics away from home are still an issue, however, there is no doubt that Vaclav Cerny, Danilo and Oscar Cortes would make a difference.
That they finished with a left-back and right-back playing on the wings as they chased an equaliser against Aberdeen tells you everything that you need to know.
Clement doesn’t deserve much credit recently, but he at least deserves some praise for not putting players at risk when his job is on the line.
It would be easy for him to rush the likes of Danilo or Rabbi Matondo and throw them back into games in an attempt to save his skin.
The only thing that will do that now is winning games.
