The small Spanish city where tourists feel ‘like they’re stepping back in time’

A small city in southern Spain has been branded as a hidden gem where tourists feel “like they’re stepping back in time” by a travel expert.

Merida has a population of around 60,000 but has a lot to offer, especially to those who love Roman history and ruins.

Speaking exclusively to the Express, Viva La Vita founder Lucia Polla has given some travel advice for those planning a trip to Spain.

She said: “Barcelona is a great city to visit, don’t get me wrong. The culture, architecture and food are all amazing.

“But it can also be really crowded, especially in the summer. I was there a few years ago in July, and it felt like you couldn’t go five minutes without bumping into someone.

“Even in the smaller streets and parks, it was just packed with tourists.”

She added: “Luckily, there are still places in Spain where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and architecture without all the crowds.

“A great hidden gem is the whole Extremadura region. With incredible historic towns like Caceres wrapped in old city walls, and Merida filled with Roman ruins, you really feel like you’re stepping back in time.

“And the countryside between the towns is just breathtaking – rolling hills as far as the eye can see.

“Best of all was how few other visitors we saw exploring the area. We never felt rushed or like we had to share the views.”

Merida is well-known for its ancient Roman ruins, which include a theatre still in use over two thousand years after it was built.

The city’s other historic sites include the Temple of Diana, the Amphitheatre, and the Roman bridge.

Besides the ruins and Roman buildings, Merida is a peaceful place to explore, with quiet streets and the banks of the Guadiana River providing nice spots for a stroll.

Nearby, visitors can also see the Roman baths at Alange, which are about 18 miles away, and the Prosperpina reservoir.

As far as getting there is concerned, Merida has easy access to airports in Badajoz and Seville.

Badajoz Airport is about 31 miles away and has flights to Madrid and Barcelona.

Seville Airport is slightly further away – about 124 miles – but offers national and international flights.
