Beautiful island is alternative to the Maldives but with fewer tourists

Must read

If you’re yearning for a summer getaway as the chill sets in, but don’t have a hefty budget, why not consider this stunning island that offers a touch of luxury at half the cost.

Con Dao island in Vietnam has been likened to the Maldives in terms of its beauty, but with fewer tourists.

Nestled off the Southern Coast of Vietnam, Con Dao is an archipelago comprising smaller islands with minimal commercial development, making it a quieter alternative.

The island also hosts a sanctuary for wild turtles, so if you plan your holiday for August, you could witness these endangered hatchlings embark on their journey to the sea.

As for the ocean, Con Dao boasts breathtakingly long beaches with soft white sand and crystal clear waters ideal for kayaking and snorkelling – there’s even a beautiful reef to discover.

Much of the island is enveloped by the Con Dao National Park.

Its thick jungle will provide ample opportunity to find your own slice of paradise. In addition to its stunning wildlife, Con Dao has a rich yet sombre history.

Once a penal colony, Con Dao housed soldiers who endured horrific conditions during both the French colonial period and the Resistance War against America. If you wish to delve deeper, you can visit the former prison, followed by the newly established museum housing over 2,000 photos and artefacts.

Con Son boasts four prison attractions, including an expansive cemetery. To visit them, ensure you’ve secured a ticket in advance.

Tickets for all four attractions can be purchased at Trai Phu Hai, located in the town centre, for 40,000 dong (£1.20) per person.

These tickets grant access to all four attractions for one day only.

If you’re considering a summer getaway, the island experiences its warmest weather between June and August.

September to January are traditionally slightly cooler, but still warmer than the UK.

To reach the island, there are several daily flights from Saigon.
