Elizabeth line set to be suspended for hours after signal fault

Must read

If you’re travelling on the London Underground this morning, prepare for severe delays after several issues across the TfL network.

A stretch of the Elizabeth line is suspended between Paddington and Abbey Wood due to a signal fault, while the rest of the line has severe delays.

The Metropolitan line has also been suspended between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Watford after a gas leak.

It comes after days of travel chaos on UK roads, rail and airports as Storm Bert brought snow, ice, heavy rain and flooding.

Several major railway routes continue to have weather disruptions, including on Great Western Railway, Transport for Wales, between Exeter St Davids and Okehampton and in Northampton where the tracks are flooded.

Travel chaos at Liverpool Street after train delays

Passengers have been caught in travel mayhem at London Liverpool Street station after a wave of delays and cancellations on the Elizabeth line.

Footage from the station shows passengers squeezed on the concourse at peak rush hour after the line has been part suspended.

An eyewitness told Metro that travellers were told to get to Liverpool Street from Stratford, only to find the line closed from Liverpool Street too.

One passenger said that while they saw no crowd control there was also ‘no rushing’ among the ‘very patient group’ gathered at the station.

She said: ‘No announcements either – tannoy told us to go to Liverpool street at Stratford, then when we arrived there was no announcement just got to the Elizabeth line section to find it closed.

‘Lot of exasperated commuters sighing and rolling eyes.’

Most people decided to take the Central line instead, she added.

Commuters have been warned of severe delays and halted trains on the Elizabeth line this morning after a signalling systems fault thought to be in the tunnels.

It means there are no trains between Paddington station and Abbey Wood, while the rest of the line has severe delays.

Elizabeth line services to Heathrow Terminal 5 also face delays.

Trains will be cancelled or revised, with disruption expected to last until 11am, National Rail said.

How can I travel instead of the Elizabeth line?

If you’re caught out in the disruption, you have a couple of different travel options.

Passengers can use tickets on the following routes.

  • c2c via any reasonable route
  • DLR
  • Greater Anglia between Shenfield and London Liverpool Street
  • Great Western Railway between Paddington and Reading
  • London Buses
  • London Underground via any reasonable route
  • Southeastern between Abbey Wood and London terminals
  • Thameslink between Abbey Wood and Farringdon

Footage shows water gushing out of the pipe onto to the busy road.

Victoria Street A302 is blocked westbound at A202 Vauxhall Bridge Road.

Bus routes 3, 11, 24 and 148 are on a detour.

Northampton train station remains closed after flooding

Northampton railway station was shut yesterday after the tracks became submerged.

All lines through the station remain blocked and buses replace trains until the end of the day, National Rail said.

London Northwestern Railway trains running between Birmingham New Street and London Euston via Long Bucky and Northampton will be cancelled.

The disruption is expected to last at least until the end of the day as a huge clean-up operation gets underway in Northampton.
