Donald Trump has been named 2024 Time magazine’s Person of the Year.
The president-elect beat the nine other shortlisted candidates, including Kate Middleton and Elon Musk.
The full shortlist for 2024 was: Kamala Harris, Kate Middleton, Elon Musk, Yulia Navalnaya, Benjamin Netanyahu, Jerome Powell, Joe Rogan, Claudia Sheinbaum, Donald Trump and Mark Zuckerberg.
This is the second time that the 78-year-old has held the title, being Time’s Person Of The Year in 2016 when he first won the White House.
Mr Trump will celebrate the win by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange later today.
In its nominee write up, the magazine wrote that his 2024 election win “is history-making in multiple ways”. They added that the president-elect “reshaped the American electorate, activating young male voters who propelled him to a decisive victory that saw him win the popular vote for the first time and turn every swing state red.”
Last year, the award went to Taylor Swift, and Barack Obama has held the title twice. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the “spirit of Ukraine” won in 2022, Elon Musk in 2021, and the Ebola fighters in 2014.
People have taken to social media to share their congratulations to Mr Trump. One user posted on X: “Time to Make America Great Again. It’s already started and we’re just getting warmed up,” with another person adding: “Person of the century!!”
However, not everyone is pleased to see the president-elect win. “Imagine idealizing this man,” an X user wrote, with another posing the question: “What has he done to be person of the year?”
