FT: Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal
Interim Arsenal boss Renee Slegers speaking to Sky Sports: “This is not one of our best performances today. I think Liverpool get the game where they wanted to go. So lots of set pieces, transitional, scrappy, it’s duels and I think we give them the game they want and we should have dictated what the game would look like.
“I think we do business today. Keep a clean sheet, win with one goal, get the three points which was most important today.”
On getting a clean sheet: “It means so much, it gives a good foundation for the team to have that trust. We are so solid defensively, whenever it comes in the game we’ll get chances and we can win games.
“We need to be alert always on set pieces. We work on the first phases and also the second and third phases of set pieces. We know that’s important, the ball lands in box and someone gets the wrong touch, you have to be there. Alessia [Russo] is very sharp at the moment, very instinctive to pick those balls up.
“We need to be more clinical and we’ve been doing really well. Obviously it’s a very intensive block with playing a lot of games, away travel to Norway, came home in the middle of the night, recharge, travel to Liverpool which is also quite a long bus trip. What we’ve been going through as a team, still getting the win today, it’s very positive.”
On title rivals dropping points: “We can’t control what the other teams do, we saw the results and I think the girls saw Chelsea yesterday and they got some extra motivation out of that but still it doesn’t mean anything. I don’t think you should get dragged away in those emotions. It’s still about what we can do, very happy everything in our control we did today, we took the three points.”
On getting the backing from the fans: “I think for me it’s meant a lot but for the players as well it feels so good to have the backing from the fans, the club, everyone. I think we went through hard times and feeling that people support us. It means the world.”
