Former England assistant coach Steve Holland has been appointed head coach of Japanese J-League side Yokohama Marinos.
Holland spent eight years as assistant manager of England under Gareth Southgate, before leaving the Three Lions last summer following Southgate’s resignation.
Alongside Southgate, Holland helped the Three Lions to runners-up spots at the European Championship in 2021 and 2024.
The 54-year-old’s only previous managerial stint came with Crewe Alexandra from 2007-08.
“Our challenge is to win the title again,” said Holland.
“We will play aggressive attacking football. We want to build a team that can compete for the title with consistency and high competitiveness.”
Holland replaces former Liverpool and Leeds midfielder Harry Kewell, who left the club in July after a run of poor results.
The Marinos finished in ninth place last season and haven’t won the title since 2022.
The club are part of the City Football Group, which operates teams such as Manchester City, New York City FC and Melbourne City FC.
Southgate has been without a job since stepping down in July.
He said in October that he is planning at least a year out from football management.
