Excursions to witness the Northern Lights are gaining popularity.
As the festive season draws near, recent data from ABTA indicates that 27% of winter holidaymakers are opting for Christmas market getaways.
While many individuals might visit local Christmas markets within the UK, there is an abundance of options across Europe and beyond. Noteworthy markets include Dresden’s Striezelmarkt, one of the oldest in existence, the Union Square Holiday Market in New York, and even the Christmas Wonderland in Singapore.
According to ABTA’s latest “Travel Trends for 2025” report, Christmas market vacations have become so sought after that they now rank as the third most favored travel option during this season, trailing only behind city escapes and winter sun vacations.
In fourth place, and seeing an increase in interest each year, are journeys to experience the Northern Lights. Recent sightings over the UK have only intensified the desire to see this natural spectacle in its traditional settings, with nearly one in five individuals (18%, up from 16% last year) planning such trips this winter.
Graeme Buck, Director of Communications at ABTA – The Travel Association, said:
“One of the biggest travel trends we’re seeing is a desire for unique experiences on holiday, and in particular the magical atmosphere of Christmas market breaks and the natural wonder of the Northern Lights are proving incredibly popular.
“If you’re heading to a Christmas market break this winter, make sure you take enough travel money with you. Many food stalls and vendors will prefer – or only accept – payment in cash and this will help you save on potentially costly ATM and bank charges when away.
“If you haven’t booked a winter break yet it’s not too late, just speak to an ABTA travel agent or tour operator for the latest prices and availability.”
