Jobs in artificial intelligence are quickly increasing in the UK in the latest sign that businesses from all corners of the economy are rapidly switching their hiring plans to adapt to the AI boom.
The job title of Artificial Intelligence Engineer was the fastest growing in 2024, while the title of AI Engineer is also in the top 10, according to fresh research from LinkedIn, indicating that skills in the sector will become increasingly critical for businesses.
Other quickly expanding roles in the UK are in the sustainability sector with the job of ‘Environment Officer’ becoming the fifth-highest growing.
But despite roles in AI and sustainability creating new opportunities, 45% of HR professionals in the UK say their company does not have a clear view on the skills it will need in the coming years.
In addition 20% of workers say they worry that they lack the skills needed for the future. This can also be seen in the hiring process as research by LinkedIn shows that it can be challenging for HR managers to source candidates with technical and sustainability skills.
But the research also shows that workers in the UK are willing to embrace new opportunities and develop their skills. 56% said they were open to taking on a role in a new industry and 27% would like opportunities to learn new, in-demand skills to help them grow in their career.
Janine Chamberlin, Head of LinkedIn UK, said “new AI and sustainability roles are redefining work, but the competition for these roles and the need for upskilling are adding pressure”.
“Yet, amidst these challenges, there is hope – over a third of job seekers are optimistic that the job market will improve in 2025.”
In order for businesses to make the most of the new opportunities presented by the growth of AI and sustainability, “it’s clear that investing in upskilling initiatives, and AI tools to help their HR teams, will be vital”, she added.
