‘Amazing’ tip for long haul flights ensures you beat jet lag when you land

Must read

Say goodbye to jet lag with this ‘amazing’ and simple flight hack.

If you’re planning on travelling this month for your summer holiday, then jet lag might be something you’re worried about, especially if you’re flying across the globe on a long-haul trip.

Moving across timezones can make you feel exhausted and throw off your sleep schedule in a major way, leaving you struggling to get to sleep at 2am in your destination and dozing off at midday.

But one woman has come up with a simple trick which will guarantee you get off your flight feeling “refreshed” and well-rested, with no hint of jet lag in sight.

According to Kylen, who shared a video on her @kylenct account on TikTok, all you need to do is change one setting on your phone to rewire your brain and get it to think it’s time for bed sooner than usual.

In her video, she explained: “If you’re travelling and going on a long haul flight, this is how you’re going to feel amazing, well-rested and re-energised after the flight. I just got off my first 11-hour flight, and I feel well-rested and excited to be alive.

“The first thing I did was manually switch my phone and watch time to be the time of my destination. The flight took off at 10am in London, which means I set my phone and my watch to 2am LA time. So then I was like, at 2am in LA, what would I be doing? Sleeping. So I let myself sleep for four hours.”

Kylen said because she wanted to have a productive morning on the plane and a productive day when she got back to LA, she allowed herself to sleep until what would be 6am in LA. This meant she wouldn’t be as exhausted when she landed, but she’d be tired enough to go to bed that evening at a reasonable time.

The hack could stop there if that’s enough for your travel needs, but Kylen went on to say she spent the remaining seven hours of her flight being as productive as possible.

She said she doesn’t often watch TV or films at home to relax, so she didn’t want to do that on the plane either as she knew that would make her more tired. However, she insisted that if you find this “restful”, then by all means “go for it”.

Kylen, however, chose a different approach. She decided to spend time doing a “digital declutter” on her phone, which involved going through her photos and clearing out things she doesn’t need any more, deleting apps she no longer uses, and checking through her notification settings.

For the remaining five hours of her flight, Kylen listened to an audiobook that she had downloaded before the flight. She said doing this helped her stay focused, but if she ever lost concentration, she would return to decluttering her phone to give herself a break before diving back into the book.

She added: “Being able to challenge myself to listen to a whole book and pay attention to it for hours on a flight made me feel amazing afterwards. In addition to eating, drinking water, and resting.”

Commenters on the post said they couldn’t wait to try out the hack the next time they were on a longer flight, with some flight attendants even saying they wish they could follow Kylen’s advice.

One person said: “Love this! Going to do it when I go to Europe, thank you!”

And another added: “I’m long haul cabin crew and I wish I could do this the whole flight. I have to be up for 75% of the flight.”
