Beautiful European city named most expensive in the world for 2024

Regarding travelling, we don’t know about you but we like to do our research before heading to a place.

Items we search for include things to do, places to eat, and the general cost of living to help determine how much money we should be spending.

However, seeing as inflation has left many Brits in the UK penny pinching it is no wonder many of us are travelling abroad less.

While putting our hard-earned cash towards a relaxing break is something that we are all doing, research has found the priciest places that you will want to be aware of before booking.

This is thanks to Numbeo, an online database which releases a Cost of Living Index every six months.

Even better their mid-2024 has just been released which has looked at factors including the cost of groceries and dining out at restaurants to name a few.

The team analysed the data across several cities to determine the overall cost of living score. So which city came out on top as the most expensive?

It may not be a surprise that Geneva in Switzerland bagged the top spot. The city scored 101.7 with the destination having costly groceries and restaurants.

The beautiful city is the second most populated in Switzerland to Zurich. Geneva is surrounded by stunning mountains and is home to the breathtaking Lake Geneza.

However, it wasn’t the only Swiss city on the list, with Zurich scoring silver. This time they scored 100.4 yet again having high costs when it comes to food in supermarkets and restaurants.

The US featured heavily in the top 10 with New York coming third, San Francisco in fourth and Boston fifth.

It’s worth noting that this index doesn’t count rent as one of its factors. Either way, both rent in the US and Switzerland are pretty pricey so you may want to factor this in too.

The average rent for an apartment in the US is $1,713 (£1,345), according to RentCafe.com. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, the average rent for a bedroom apartment outside the city centre is 942.31 Fr. (£842.89).
